Money Advice Service

Citizens Advice has teamed up with the Money Advice Service – previously the Consumer Financial Education Body (CFEB) – to provide free, impartial money advice sessions across Wales.

Money Advice sessions are community-based, taking place at bureaux and outreach locations in six areas, known as hubs, Cardiff Vales and Valleys is a hub. Money advice can help make the most of whatever money you have and take steps to plan for the future. Money advice sessions are available to everyone but we need to make sure we reach the people who need us most.

Money advice can help you to:

• prepare a weekly or monthly budget

• learn about the different types of mortgage

• find out about savings options

• plan for retirement

• understand the tax and welfare benefits systems

• know about the different types of credit available

• protect your families with insurance for yourselves, your relatives, car and home.

As the Money Advice Service is completely impartial, we won’t make recommendations or try to sell any financial products and services.

Money advice isn’t debt advice and won’t be suitable if you have unmanageable debts or are in crisis. But money advice may be appropriate at a later stage, once the crisis or debts are under control.

Who is it for?

We are keen to engage with people at key life-changing stages such as:

• leaving education

• starting work

• buying a home

• expecting a baby

• redundancy

• relationship breakdown

• approaching retirement

• bereavement

What can you expect?

At the one-to-one appointment, our trained Money Guides will:

• gather personal information to understand your particular needs

• prioritise between issues to ensure the most pressing is dealt with

• outline your options and provide additional information

• draw up an action plan with clear steps to guide you

• provide options for specialist advice if the help needed is not covered by the Money Advice Service

At the end of the session, you will have the information and guidance you need to take steps to improve your financial position. It is not a casework service and you won’t normally have to return for a further appointment.
